Early Life and High School
Ja Morant was born Temetrius Jamel Morant on August 10, 1999, in Dalzell, South Carolina, to Jamie and Tee. His father had played basketball at Claflin University, while his mother was a point guard in high school before becoming a softball player in college. He has a younger sister named Teniya, who also plays basketball. Growing up, Morant practised basketball in the backyard with his father. He went on to play on the Amateur Athletic Union circuit with the South Carolina Hornets. Morant attended Crestwood High School for his education and participated in basketball there. At the time he left, he had 1,679 points, making him the school’s all-time leading scorer. Morant also earned South Carolina 3A All-State honours in his last two high school seasons.
Murray State University basketball team unintentionally came across Morant in July 2016 when assistant coach James Kane noticed him competing in a game at a camp’s auxiliary gym. Kane spoke with head coach Matt McMahon about the kid’s performance, and the latter then extended a scholarship offer to Morant. Morant made his Murray State debut in a 118-61 victory over Brescia University in November 2017. He recorded his first double-double of his career the following month in a defeat to Saint Louis University. Shortly after, Morant defeated Eastern Illinois while recording his first triple-double of his career. He later assisted Murray State in making it to the NCAA Tournament, where they ultimately lost to West Virginia in the first round.
It was in his sophomore year at Murray State that Morant truly excelled. In his season debut against Wright State, he recorded 26 points and 11 assists in a 74-53 victory. Afterwards, he scored a season-high 38 points in a defeat to Alabama. Early in 2019, Morant (18 assists) surpassed Murray State’s previous mark for the most assists in a single game. Only a little over a week later, he recorded a new career-high scoring total with 40 points in a win over SIU Edwardsville. Throughout the course of the rest of the season, Morant proceeded to have success, setting new assists marks for his school and the OVC. Morant received the OVC Player of the Year award at the conclusion of the regular season. He then helped lead Murray State to the NCAA Tournament, ultimately falling to Florida State in the second round. Morant made the decision to enter the NBA draught rather than finish his remaining two collegiate seasons as a result.
The Memphis Grizzlies selected Morant with the second overall choice in the 2019 NBA Draught. In an October 101–120 loss to the Miami Heat, he started his first game. The following month, in a 117-115 victory over the Charlotte Hornets, he performed better and recorded his first double-double in the NBA. He also made the game-winning layup. Morant recorded his first triple-double in the NBA early in 2020 during a 106-99 victory over the Washington Wizards. With an average of 7.1 assists per game in his first NBA season, he stood out among all rookies. With 17.8 points per game and 1,138 total points, Morant also had the most points among all rookies. He received NBA Rookie of the Year recognition at the end of the season.
Morant’s career-high 44 points in a 119-131 loss to the San Antonio Spurs in late 2020 was one of the high points of his second season with the Grizzlies. He guided the Grizzlies to a 117–112 overtime victory over the Golden State Warriors in the spring of the following year, securing a postseason berth. Morant then defeated the top-seeded Utah Jazz in an upset to make his NBA playoff debut. The Grizzlies ultimately fell 129-141 despite his amazing 47 points and seven assists in Game 2. After five games, the team was ultimately ejected from the competition. In the 2021–22 season, Morant maintained his strong play; in February, he tied his 44-point career best before surpassing it by six points a week later. He did so by breaking the Grizzlies player record for most points scored in a single game. Only two days later, Morant set the record with 52 points in a victory over the San Antonio Spurs.
