Sonya Eddy, who portrayed Epiphany on the long-running ABC soap opera General Hospital for the past 16 years, passed away on Monday. She was a beloved co-star on the show. Her age was 55.

Octavia Spencer, an actress and close friend of Eddy’s, broke the news to her Instagram followers on Tuesday, saying, “My friend Sonya Eddy died away last night. The world has suffered the loss of another creative angel. Her throngs of devoted followers of General Hospital will miss her.”

Following a procedure that was considered to be regular on December 9, Eddy allegedly developed an illness that was “uncontainable.” She was readmitted to the hospital a few days later, and by the time she reached the point of no return, she was put on life support. On Monday evening, she passed away.

Eddy, who in real life worked as a registered vocational nurse, made her debut on General Hospital in 2006 in the role of GH’s no-nonsense, big-hearted nurse. In 2007, the character made the jump to the SoapNet spinoff GH: Night Shift, which lasted only a few seasons before being cancelled.

On Twitter, General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini expressed his sadness, writing, “I am saddened over the passing of the amazing Sonya Eddy.” Not only did I admire her as an actress, but I also considered her a dear friend.

TMZ was able to get in touch with Sonya Eddy’s producing partner and close friend, Tyler Ford, who disclosed that her health difficulties began following a surgery that was scheduled for December 9 and was not an emergency procedure.

Eddy started to feel bad again after being released from the hospital on December 11, and he was readmitted to the hospital on December 15, which is when the doctors discovered that he was developing a post-surgery infection.

Ford added that the physicians were unable to contain the illness and that Eddy had been placed on life support on Monday morning. Tragically, she passed away that very same night.
